Proctology is a medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the colon and rectum.
Proctology includes the treatment of haemorrhoids, intestinal ruptures, polyps, strictures and fistulas, as well as colorectal cancer and other proctological diseases.
A proctologist should be consulted if the patient has unpleasant symptoms related to the rectal or anal area, including abdominal distension, bleeding, pain or irritation in the anal area.
In case of such symptoms, we recommend that you do not postpone the consultation and make an appointment at our clinic.
Symptoms that may indicate proctological disease:
At the start of the visit, the proctologist asks the patient about symptoms, medical history, previous examinations and medications taken.
A proctological examination or digital examination is then performed in a separate room.
During the examination, the patient lies on his left side, with his legs in his lap.
This position allows the proctologist better access to the rectal area.
During the examination, the proctologist wears gloves and gently examines the bowel with his finger using a special lubricant.
The digital examination allows the proctologist to assess the rectal wall and sphincter tone and diagnose haemorrhoids or ruptures.
If necessary, the proctologist may use a proctoscope or an anoscope – a short, lighted tube – to visually inspect the anal canal and the lower part of the rectum.
After the consultation, the proctologist may prescribe additional diagnostic tests, such as colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy, to better assess the patient’s gastrointestinal health.
At the end of the consultation, a treatment plan is drawn up.
