Laparoscopic prostatectomy is a minimally invasive operation in which the prostate gland is removed. This method is used in the surgical treatment of prostate cancer in certain cases.
During laparoscopic surgery, several small incisions are made instead of one large incision.
Laparoscopic surgery is less traumatic compared to traditional open surgery, significantly reduces post-operative pain and ensures a faster recovery process.
The small incisions also provide a more aesthetic result with less scarring.
The operation takes an average of an hour and a half and is performed under general anaesthesia.
During the surgery, the operating doctor makes 3-4 small incisions through which the camera and surgical instruments are inserted.
The camera allows the doctor to accurately visualise the prostate and surrounding structures during the operation.
During surgery, the prostate gland and seminal vesicles are separated from the surrounding tissue and removed.
If necessary, the lymph nodes are also removed.
If the prostate tumour is at a low risk, the nerve bundle responsible for erectile function is preserved.
On average, you need to stay in hospital for 3-5 days after surgery.
You will be able to stand up and walk independently from the first post-operative day.
It is recommended that you rest for 1-2 weeks after surgery. After the operation, a long catheter is inserted into the bladder.
This is removed by the doctor during a check-up, on average 7-10 days after surgery.
Avoid going to the sauna and bath for 4 weeks after surgery.
During this period, you should not do any strenuous physical exercise or lift weights of more than 5 kg.
When you book an appointment, your doctor will tell you how to prepare and answer all your questions. Before surgery, you may need to consult an anaesthetist and have several tests, such as blood tests, a lung X-ray and an electrocardiogram. The specific tests will be prescribed by our surgeon during your consultation.
Laparoscopic prostatectomy is performed when prostate cancer requires surgical treatment. Most often, the patient comes for surgery after a consultation and examination by a urologist.
Reasons when your doctor may recommend surgery:
a confirmed diagnosis of prostate cancer and the need for radical treatment;
treatment tactics are based on tests and examinations;
the patient’s general state of health allows the operation.
Important: The most appropriate treatment method is always chosen individually by the doctor, based on the tests and the stage of the disease.
Laparoscopic prostatectomy is a modern operation performed through several small incisions in the anterior abdominal wall using a laparoscopic technique.
What is done during surgery:
the prostate gland is removed under general anaesthetic;
In some cases, lymph node evaluation/removal may also be necessary (as indicated).
Advantages of the method:
fewer cuts and a gentler approach;
generally better post-operative well-being and faster recovery;
shorter hospital stay compared to open surgery (in the absence of complications).
